Spring is upon us in New Orleans! The weather is warming up and it is the perfect time to get outside and do things before it just gets way too hot. With all the festivals, fairs and other outdoor activities going on, there is an increased chance that falls will happen given the large crowds and all the environmental hazards that exist on the sometimes treacherous streets of New Orleans. Your risk of falling is also increased if you have vision or hearing deficits or are taking multiple medications. Falls occur more often outside the home than in the home and occur most often on curbs, parking lots, and uneven sidewalks. Falls are the leading cause of injury to seniors. It is estimated that 30% of 65 year olds and 40% of 75 year olds will have a fall each year. Falls are not necessarily a marker of poor health but rather may be attributed to a more active lifestyle. Here at STAR Physical Therapy we can help restore your mobility, strength, and balance in the event that you do have a fall. We can also educate you on ways to reduce your risk of falling, such as suggesting the use of an assistive device or changes to your footwear. So be safe and enjoy this beautiful weather and know that we are here to help you recover if needed!
