You Can Get in Great Shape – Even if you Hurt

July 20th, 2016

January is a great time to start an exercise program. It’s a new year and with our sub-tropical climate in Louisiana, bathing suit weather is a few short months away. The chances are you are already starting to think about working out again.

But plenty of people aren’t sure if they can exercise effectively, because they hurt. Knees are a common problem and back pain is famous for turning folks into couch potatoes. A good friend of mine contacted me this week. His wrists hurt from sports injuries when he was younger. In fact, they hurt so bad that he is not sure if it’s worth even getting to the gym.

I explained that it definitely is possible for him to get the results he is seeking. By evaluating his wrists and taking the time to understand his goals, I am going to put a great plan together for him that works around his problem.

Health club equipment has developed over the years to the point that just using different, updated machines may be all you need to do. Many facilities also have machine attachments that can eliminate load on certain joints. There is always more than one way to skin a cat. If you are looking to lose weight or gain muscle, then you can bet there is a solution.

So don’t you let health problems or pain stop you from receiving all the benefits of exercise. Find an exercise-minded physical therapist; one who lives what he preaches about staying healthy, and have him / her find a way for you to get the results you want.

STAR is offering pre-exercise physical screenings to assess for risk factors and make exercise recommendations.
